Bobbin Lace Braids (Tapes)

Instructor: Gilian Dye

Course Description: Once you have mastered basic bobbin-lace techniques there are many avenues to explore, from complex designs requiring hundreds of bobbins to simpler patterns needing less than a dozen pairs. This workshop will introduce you to the making of braids, requiring between three and twelve pairs of bobbins, with colourful threads to create a variety of plain and patterned braids that can be used straight or shaped into letters, motifs, trims or complete laces. We will start with a straight sampler of techniques, worked in pearl cotton #8 or #12, before moving on to shaping and joining the braids, varying the texture with different threads and adding beads and other objects. You will be encouraged to experiment and develop your own ideas.

Level: Beginner

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of beginning bobbin lace

Dates: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, July 26, 28, 30, 2021

Point Ground Clothwork

Instructor: Pierre Fouché

Course Description: In this course I will guide you in putting the principles of two pair clothwork using an isometric grid to practice. Starting with the four-pin clothwork motif as the basic unit, we’ll move on to designing trails, and then more complex compound shapes. You will learn and practice how to interpret and work any shape in point ground clothwork. This workshop will culminate in your designing a small sampler using shapes derived from either watercolour brush strokes or torn paper collage, depending on your preference for wet or dry media. If you have worked some torchon cloth stitch diamonds before, you’d be able to benefit from this course.
