Milanese Lace

Instructor: Louise Colgan

Course Description: Milanese is an elegant free-flowing form of tape lace characterized by special decorative stitches that become integral features of each design.  The creative nature of this type of lace opens up endless possibilities for both traditional and contemporary interpretation.  The Eternity Heart project chosen for our class is a new design that is tailored to suit the online format.  This pattern includes a variety of Braids and essential Milanese skills.  Lacemakers are given the option of using colored threads to make their own unique piece from the selected pattern.  Instructional materials will be sent to each student prior to our class.

Level: Intermediate / Advanced

Prerequisites: Students must have previous experience with Milanese at the intermediate level or beyond.  Ability to follow and understand diagrams independently is necessary for our online workshop format.  Other required skills include Pin-under-4 Edge and Sewings.  Proficiency with Torchon and/or other Tape Laces is beneficial as well.

Designing Bobbin Lace Grounds with GroundForge

Instructor: Veronika Irvine

Course Description: GroundForge is a web tool for experimenting with stitches and pair diagrams.  It generates a thread diagram so you can get a rough idea of how the lace will work up.  In this workshop, we will cover the basics of how to use the catalogues of ground patterns, modify cross and twist stitches, create footside patterns for existing grounds and work with grounds not found in the catalogues. You can find out more about the tool and view some examples on the web site:  https://d-bl.github.io/GroundForge/

Level: Intermediate / Advanced

Prerequisites: A general basic knowledge of bobbin lace is required.  Students should be comfortable with Rose ground.  They should be able to draw (on paper or with computer drawing software) a pricking for a rectangular patch of Rose ground with a pin-after-two footside.

Dates: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, July 27, 29, 31, 2021

Times: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm PDT

Registration Fee: $100

Students Must Supply: A desktop computer with internet access, graph paper, pencil, eraser. While GroundForge can run on an iPad, it does not work well enough for this course.

Second Device: If your desktop computer does not have a camera or microphone, you will also need to connect with a tablet or smart phone so that the teacher can see and hear you.

Fundamental Skills in Bobbin Lace

Instructor: Holly Van Sciver

Course Description: For bobbin lace students of all levels, this course is designed to polish the fundamentals.  The class will cover the basics such as how to wind bobbins, make a proper half hitch, mount a pricking, manage your bobbins on the pillow and pin placement.  As time allows we will learn how to work a footside, understand bobbin lace terminology, read diagrams, how to make picots, petals and tallies, how to work with tools, and much, much more. For beginners, this is a chance to learn the foundation skills of bobbin lace. For those who have been making lace for many years, this is a chance to refine your basic skills and retune old habits.

You can bring the supplies and by working a simple tape we will cover as many of the elements listed above in the time allowed. Or if you don’t want to prepare anything, or have a “hands on” experience, I will be demonstrating virtually all the elements discussed in the class.  Many of these skills you can learn by listening and observation. I want this class to be easy, fun and informative. I invite you to send in advance any questions or topics you would like me to cover.
